Astangu - A secret underground world!

The Astangu tour is one of our more special ones, taking you to underground ammunition caves that are closed to the general public. We explore a former Soviet military base, take a look at abandoned structures and talk about Peter the Great's Naval Fortress. Tour stops include the ruins of Mäepealse village, crossing Tallinn's only rapids and enjoying the untouched wilderness. We share incredible stories of criminal activity in the Astangu forest you won't hear anywhere else. If you think you know everything about Astangu based on ChatGPT, military history pages and urban legends - think again, because you haven't been to Matkafy's Astangu tour yet!

"A big thank-you to the guide of Matkafy Lantern Hikes! The Pipelife Eesti AS team took part in a memorable lantern hike on September 29, 2025, exploring the Tsar-era military ammunition depots in Astangu. It was a wonderful experience filled with fascinating new knowledge. Our guide had a great way with words — plenty of good humor and engaging stories that kept us entertained all evening. Mihkel, the guide, managed to turn even the most ordinary hill into an exciting story. Adding extra fun were the quiz-style questions along the way, and the guide was happy to answer additional ones too. The candlelit tea break was absolutely charming, and on the way back downhill, our group created a beautiful trail of lanterns. The guide was clearly passionate about his work and very knowledgeable. And to top it all off, the weather was perfect — a warm and dry autumn evening that set the ideal mood."

"Thank you for the hike — it was very exciting, and our guide Tom was excellent. Since most of our group are foreigners, it was especially interesting to hear the story from someone who isn’t Estonian. For me, as an Estonian, it was also fascinating to see and hear everything perhaps from a slightly different perspective. In any case, we were all very pleased, and now that the curiosity is sparked, we’ll definitely start going on hikes with you regularly 😊"
